Formative Years
1938 until 1964 Attended school and served with the United States Marine Corps before graduating from Lamar University with a degree in History and Economics. Also worked as a merchant seaman earning Fireman-Oiler certification and studied at Mexico City College, acquiring fluent Spanish, along with an appreciation of Latin culture.
Getting Educated
1964 until 1970 Entered graduate school at Texas A & M University, earning scholarships to do research on developing nations. Worked in the Dominican Republic before earning a doctorate in agricultural economics.
Becoming a Professional
1970 until 1993 Worked as an international economist at the Harvard Business School's branch in Central America before returning to teach at the Citadel and other universities. Started a marina management seminar program at the Citadel, which lead to marina consulting assignments with Pier 66, the City of Miami, Longboat Key (ARVIDA), the National Marine Manufacturer's Association, and many others. Cited as an expert on marinas in the New York Times.
Applying My Knowledge to Help Others
1993 until present Business writer about the hospitality industry for Soundings:Trade Only, Boating Industry, Urban Land, the Marine Business Journal, and other publications. Currently serving as an expert witness in dealer termination suits on the side of the plaintiff. Clients include Tuppens of Lake Worth, Florida, Quality Boats of Clearwater and Boats Inc.of Niantic, Connecticut. Analyzing other business interruption claims at the Dolphin Cove Marina in Charleston, South Carolina and the New Inn at Bermuda Dunes in Palm Springs, California.
